Travel Information - 2019

There are many flight options including multiple airports and many major cities within 5-6 hours, so many Planet Hockey families elect to rent a car to increase their arrival & departure airport options.  See car rental suggestion below.

All confirmed Planet Hockey Families that have paid their deposit, may book their air travel at any time.  Currently, the fares to Europe are attractive.  Typically, the best time to book summer fares is January-March, which is when the discounted summer fares are published.  Western US families should find coach fares around $1,200(+/- $200) and Eastern US families should find coach fares $1,000 (+/- $200).  If I can help in any way with your travel plans, please give me a call at 720-304-3880.

Once your flights are booked, please email them to  You will receive an 'Arrival Plan Form' in April gathering arrival plans for each family/player.

Copenhagen, Denmark (CPH) – likely the best and lowest cost flight options.  CPH is among the lowest cost European hubs and services all major airlines.

  • From CPH to Esbjerg (3 hours) – best option is Train.  It appears that they are booking only 3 months out.  Tickets cost from $30-$60 per direction, per person.  Wi-fi is available on the train.  3 hour trip, with one connection in Copenhagen Central Station.  The Esbjerg train station to Hotel Britannia is a 5 minute walk, or $10 taxi.

Hamburg, Germany (HAM) – train/bus is available, or a 3 hour drive to Esbjerg via rental car.

Billund, Denmark (BLL) – this is the International headquarters for LegoLand.  40 minute drive to Esbjerg.  Limited flight options in and out as compared to CPH.  Your host family may be able to pick you up.

Car Rental – most families in the past have elected to rent a car from their arrival airport for the duration of the tour.  You can use or your favorite search tool.

Departures – all events conclude on Friday evening, August 2nd.  Players will go back with their host family Friday night for a Saturday drop-off at the hotel, depending on your Saturday departure time.

When should we arrive into Esbjerg?

Tour Begins - The tour officially begins at 5pm on Friday, July 26 in the Hotel Britannia lobby.  We will have a short meet and greet, then all players will go home with their host families.  That said, almost all families will arrive early and book an extra night or two at Hotel Britannia.  Host families will get all players to the rink beginning Saturday, July 27th by 8am.  Most families will arrive into Europe 1-5 days prior to July 26 to combat jet-lag and to see another city/country.  The first included night in the at Hotel Britannia for all non-players is Friday, July 26.

Tour Ends - The tour officially ends Friday night, August 2.  That night, we will enjoy the closing bbq party at the rink.  Our hotel is reserved through Friday night with a Saturday, August 3 check-out.  You may book departure flights anytime on Saturday, August 3rd or later.  We recommend late morning, or later, departure flights if leaving on August 3rd (3 hours to CPH airport).

Should we book our flights now?  Please do not book flights until you have been officially confirmed on the tour by Shawn Killian. If you have any questions, call or email Shawn Killian or call 720-304-3880. Please email your travel itinerary to Shawn once booked.

Early Arrivals - Arriving into Europe one to five days early is a good idea.  Contact the Hotel Britannia front desk staff (will be emailed to all confirmed families) if you would like to book additional nights at Hotel Britannia prior to July 26th or after August 3rd. Make sure to mention that you are with Planet Hockey to receive our group rate.

Host Families - If you use the Billund Airport, your host family 'may' come pick you up.  This cannot be confirmed until you receive your host family assignment in early May and is based on their availability.

Any tips to SAVE $ on our airline tickets?
(1) Use search engines such as Google Flights, Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz. Once you have found a price you like, consider booking it directly with the air carrier in case any changes become necessary. Dealing directly with the airlines is much easier than having to work through a 3rd Party if a change is necessary.
(2) Look into booking a roundtrip into a major city/hub in Europe such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam or London. Then look at a round trip between that city and your Denmark Airport. Sometimes this can save a few bucks.

Passports & Travel Alerts - are required of all participants. It is strongly recommended that your passport be valid at least 6 months after your scheduled return.  Your entry into your first European arrival city could be denied of this condition is not met.  Other travel restrictions may be in place, please check for any travel advisories.
