Stickhandling - Range of Motion

STICKHANDLING OVERVIEW

Stickhandling Keys:  Reach your hands OUT & AWAY from your body for maximum Reach, Feel, Control and Range of Motion.  Have a firm grip, but yet be gentle with the puck (through 'soft hands') & cradle/"cup" the puck by rolling your wrists.  Never over-stickhandle the puck.  Lastly, try to control the puck with your head up, which will allow you to see the ice and will decrease the probability of injury.

STEP #1:  Reach
The key to puck control is REACH.  Players create reach, and therefore, command space by reaching your hands away from your body (fully extending your lower arm), while bending your knees.  Also, the more you keep your head (and eyes) up, the more of a creative threat you become.  Become skilled at controlling the puck not only in front of your body, but also out to each side.  Be that player with SICK HANDS!

STEP #2:  Sweep & Snap
As you draw the puck laterally, 'snap' it with soft, but hands firm enough to control the quick move.  This move should be executed with your upper body (chest) square to the direction you are traveling, with strong edges and with your hands reach out and away from your body for maximum reach.  Also, make your move close 'enough' to your opponent so that they fall for your move, BUT never so close that they can impede your progress, steal the puck or play your body.

STEP #3:  Reach
The key to puck control is REACH.  Players create reach, and therefore, command space by reaching your hands away from your body (fully extending your lower arm), while bending your knees.  Also, the more you keep your head (and eyes) up, the more of a creative threat you become.  Become skilled at controlling the puck not only in front of your body, but also out to each side.  Be that player with SICK HANDS!

MORE RANGE OF MOTION - It is important with your stickhandling to be able to move the puck in a large range of motion around your body.  In order to take your game to the next level ensure that you are working on your range of motion with the puck.
